For a dormitory enriching students’ lives

Since the dormitory was established in 1950 by Matashichi Hamanaka, a citizen, many university students have lived in the dormitory over the past 70 years and are now very active members of society. In 2013, Ichitoku Hamanaka took over the dormitory’s operations as a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, but he has now decided to retire. Inheriting the spirit of the two Hamanaka chairmen, we will continue to support student life to achieve our dormitory’s major goal of nurturing human resources, with a heavy emphasis on what the founders chose to name the dormitory “Uminohoshi” (Maris Stella).

A university is a place for study and research, but students spend much of their time off campus. The way they spend their time is just as important as their study and research on campus. Living in a student dormitory is one of their choice. However, sharing a place for sleeping and eating, making efforts to protect one’s own living environment, and sharing joys and sorrows are highly important opportunities to learn how to live together and to get many friends. We believe that dormitory life will be a good occasion to develop their individuality, enlighten each other, and broaden their horizons. The experience must help students to lead rich and fulfilling lives.
